Weekend trip to the Highlands, Scotland (3 days) – by AAFK

Loch Lomond, Oban, Loch Shiel...
Duration 3 days

This is the itinerary of weekend (road) trip I took to the Highlands in Scotland with a group of friends in August 2012. We rented a car and covered quite a few places in 3 days (Loch Lomond, Oban, Fort William, Loch Shiel, Loch Laggan and Stirling).

I would recommend it overall athough we didn’t have time to reach the famous Loch Ness. 1 or 2 extra days would be ideal to see the most interesting places without rushing.

Trip route

Step by step

Day 1: Loch Lomond, Oban

For this weekend trip to the Highlands we started by picking up the rental car from Glasgow International Airport and drove straight to Loch Lomond.

Late afternoon we reached Oban where we spent the night at the Corran House Hostel.

We started drinking on the beach in front of the hostel and a police car arrived to tell us it was not allowed. They were very kind and after we threw our drinks away they actually drove us in their police car to a nice Pub in the center.

After this nice episode we happily walked in town from pub to pub before finally reaching some kind of dancing bar next to the port where we finished the night.

Day 2: Loch Shiel, Fort William

We went to Loch Shiel (where the Harry Potter bridge is! - Glenfinnan Viaduct) then visited Fort William and the surroundings.

We spent the night at Spean Bridge in a somewhat strange hotel dedicated to the troops that used to trained in the area like British Commando Forces in the Second World War.

Day 3: Loch Laggan, Stirling

The last day we just drove back to Glasgow through Stirling which is a very nice town medieval (check out the castle).

On the way we also passed by Loch Laggan.
