Napoleon‘s History so this was a very exciting surprise. I find the battles of Austerlitz and Waterloo especially fascinating, the first symbolizing the apogée of the Napoleonic Empire and the second its ultimate demise. Interestingly, Austerlitz was narrated in great details by Leo Tolstoy in War and Peace through the eyes of Mikhail Kutuzov while Victor Hugo tackled Waterloo in Les Misérables. In any case, I had never thought of Austerlitz as a village in the Netherlands.

The Pyramid of Austerlitz is a monument that was built in 1804 in Zeist by soldiers of Napoleon’s Great Army to relieve the troops’ boredom. With its 36-meter (118 ft) height topped by a stone Obelisk (the original one was wooden though), the Pyramid of Austerlitz is a unique attraction in the Netherlands. The climb to the top costs only 2 euros. A good bargain that will save you a trip to Egypt to see the Pyramid of Khufu the Pyramid of Austerlitz was modeled after.

Although it may not be your first pick if you visit the Netherlands, I would warmly recommend to make a detour by the Pyramid of Austerlitz if you have the opportunity!

How to get there

by car: only 1 hour from Amsterdam (62 km / 39 mi)

by train and bicycle (recommended): rent bicycles and take a train from Amsterdam to Utrecht (30 minutes). The bicycle return trip from Utrecht to the Pyramid of Austerlitz is 34 km (22 mi). It may seem a lot but the landscape is beautiful and with the weather on your side you won’t feel a thing! Also, worse comes to worst you can always take a train back to Amsterdam from Maarn instead of going back to Utrecht by cycling.

[codepeople-post-map]
