Blue is the Warmest Color (La vie d’Adèle) filmed in the north of France

I have to confess: this movie wrecked me for days. Blue is the Warmest Color (2013) is one of these movies that cut deep and leave a trace on you forever. I saw ’12 Years a Slave’ recently and, although it moved me, I must say it didn’t even come close to this film. There’s something profoundly heart wrenching in these 3 hours narrating the tale of Adèle, a high-school student who’s discovering herself  through her love relationship with Emma a university art student. The spectactor witnesses roughly a decade of Adèle’s life and is not spared any moment, any emotion. Through the extraordinary acting of Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux and direction by Abdellatif Kechiche, we can feel the burning love between the two women but also their falling apart and ultimately the unfathomable loneliness of Adèle.

The North of France can be proud of having been chosen for the filming locations of this Cannes Palme d’Or-winning movie. Although the region Nord-Pas-de-Calais is often associated with bad weather, Blue is the Warmest Color presents it under a sunny light with the first part of the movie taking place during summer days. Add the blossoming love between the two protagonists in the movie and you get the urge to (re)discover the north of France!
